Get on Board, A Series of Delicious Food Boards: Bagels
Last week my family and I had a bagel board for our Saturday morning brunch. It was fun to make (and eat), delicious, and had options for each of us. It made brunch an activity, rather than just a meal. We tried new combinations and made recommendations for each other. This is a great idea for a group, especially if folks have different dietary restrictions. I was able to separate meat and non-meat options, and gluten and gluten free options. There are endless possibilities for your bagel board, but hopefully seeing what we used will give you some inspiration. It was great to have a breakfast that was sweet AND savory.
The Bagels.
For our bagel board, we had the following bagels: plain, everything, cinnamon raisin, and blueberry (most with a gluten free version and a regular version). Each whole bagel was cut into quarters so we would not get full before trying several different combinations.
The Cream Cheeses.
We had a few different cream cheeses, including plain, garden vegetable, and strawberry.
Other Spreads.
In addition to the cream cheeses, we had peanut butter and Nutella.
The Toppings.
Our bagel board had the following toppings: bananas, strawberries, two kinds of granola (chocolate and birthday cake), lox, everything but the bagel seasoning, avocado, apples, chocolate chips, onions, eggs, capers, cheddar cheese, gouda cheese, and tomatoes.
My favorite savory combination was a plain bagel, garden vegetable cream cheese, avocado, egg, and everything but the bagel seasoning (this is how I eat my avocado toast-YUM!). For something sweet, I recommend the cinnamon raisin bagel, strawberry cream cheese, and granola or the plain bagel with peanut butter, Nutella, and fruit. My husband and nephew both had lox for the first time and they loved it! My husband paired it with an everything bagel and my nephew liked it with a plain bagel.
I frequently make cheese boards, but I never thought to make a bagel board. After the bagel board, of course, I started thinking about all the foods that could be tailored to personal tastes and served like a mini buffet. Therefore, this will be the first post in a series on food boards. Check back later to get on board!
Have you made an interesting food board?
