Sister Styling: Can We Both Wear That?

Happy April! The weather has been unpredictable for the past few weeks with sun, rain, and EVEN snow. However, the random beautiful spring days have made me hit “add to cart” on a ton of new spring pieces. I ordered the usual suspects (floral dresses), but also some solid, versatile, and trendy pieces. I grabbed these pieces in my sister’s size too so YOU can see them on a body with a different size and shape. It’s hard to know whether something that looks good on someone else will look good on you if your bodies are nothing alike, so we are putting these trends to the test!

In past styling segments, I picked out stuff for myself and just duplicated the order. I have also ordered trendy items for us that neither of us would have picked out (remember the bodysuits?!) so that we could see if the style looked good on either of us. For this segment, it’s a blend of both. These items are popular for spring, but most of them I would have absolutely picked for one of us. I styled these10 pieces into 5 different outfits. Check out all the details below!

Outfit 1

The jumpsuit and heeled sandals in this outfit are both from Target. I wore a size XS in the jumpsuit and a size 6 in the braided sandals. My sister wore a size XL in the jumpsuit and a size 7.5 in the braided sandals. The jumpsuit is a regular fit, not petite or tall, and we both wore our typical size. There are several colors available in both the jumpsuit and the braided sandals. The braided sandals are a swap for similar (but much more expensive) pairs from other retailers.

I love the look and fit of the jumpsuit. The straps are adjustable, so it makes it more petite friendly. When you tie the shoulder ties tight, it draws up the arm holes and the neckline. Before tightening the straps, the v-neck was too low for me and the sides hung. It was regular bra friendly, comfortable, and flattering on my body shape. The inseam was a cropped pant leg and I love the way it looks with these heels. The sandals have a round block heel and are very comfortable for the heel height. The sandal straps are a mix of gold, nude, cream, and beige and they are a perfect neutral for all my summer dresses and outfits…so I’m keeping them!

My sister was weary of this jumpsuit because she feels like one-piece outfits accentuate her midsection, which she does not love. However, she felt like the elastic waist broke up the garment and gave shape to her body. It doesn’t hurt that it also has pockets! She stated that the pockets were big, soft inside, and located in the right spot on her body. She also tied the straps tight to draw up the arm holes and neckline. I did not wear anything under the jumpsuit, but she paired it with a stretchy cami. She loved the look of the heeled sandals and she thought that they were surprisingly comfortable. In the end, she decided that heels are not a practical part of her lifestyle. She paired it with sandals and the length also looked good with flat shoes.

We both kept the jumpsuit! It was a great value (under $35 with tax) and the material is a comfortable linen-rayon blend. We both decided that it was very versatile since it can be worn with heels for a date or sandals and a jacket/cardigan for a more casual look. This jumpsuit definitely worked on both our body types. My sister plans on wearing this for our Mother’s Day brunch!

Outfit 2

This outfit featured one of my closet staples, a fitted blazer, and a trendy straight leg jean. The blazer is from Amazon and the denim is from Target. I am wearing a size small in the blazer and a size 2 short in the denim. My sister is wearing a size XL in the blazer and a size 14 short in the denim. There are several colors available in the blazer and three washes available in the denim.

For me, this outfit is a mix of old and new styles. I have several blazers, both fitted and boyfriend, and I regularly wear them for work. Sometimes I forget that they can also be used to elevate a basic jeans and t-shirt outfit. I love the bright, coral color of this blazer (listed as Z-pink). It’s perfect for spring and summer outfits. I sized up to a small and it’s a perfect fit. It is surprisingly good quality for under $50, but this color does show wrinkles more than I prefer.

The jeans are a high waist, straight leg style…which is new to me. I have also never tried denim from Target and I was pleasantly surprised by the feel of the material. They were very soft against the skin and not tight anywhere. These jeans come in sizes 00-18 in short, regular, and long and they are under $30. Ultimately, I loved everything about these jeans except the high rise. I have a long torso, and they cut me in an unflattering spot when I sit.

My sister’s work dress code is very casual, so a blazer is not in her typical rotation. I loved seeing her in an elevated casual style and the color looked great on her! She reported that she loved the color and how the outfit looked, but it was not practical for her wardrobe. It was fitted in the shoulders and arms, but not to the point of being uncomfortable. She could not button the blazer and it would have been more comfortable to go up one size.

My sister loved the denim and ended up keeping them. The high rise worked well on her body shape and she noted that they are soft and comfortable. The looser straight leg (instead of skinny) allowed her to roll them for an even more cropped length. These jeans also looked great with the Old Navy sweatshirt below. I think the style of this outfit works on a wide range of body sizes and shapes.

Outfit 3

For this on-the-go outfit, I wore a size small in the skort and a size XS in the top. Laura wore a size XL in the skort and a size XL in the top. The numeric sizes seemed off, so I recommend choosing your regular alpha size. There is no XS available in the skort, so I ordered a small which shows a numeric size 4-6, but it fit like a 2-4. The XL skort fit my sister well, but it was listed as a numeric size 16-18 and she is typically a size 14. The skort has an interior drawstring at the waist.

Belt bag, bum bag, fanny pack…whatever you want to call it, I’m in for this whole outfit! I’ve worn many crossbody bags, but never something like this. This particular Lululemon belt bag has gone viral and I couldn’t resist. The in-stock colors change several times per day, so just keep checking if you are interested in a certain color. I’m still nervous to wear it in public, but I can certainly see how convenient this would be while shopping or at an amusement park or sporting event. It definitely gives you easy access to your phone and other small necessities.

I think the bag looks great paired with an athleisure style outfit, and this one is super comfortable and affordable. This athletic skort is a cotton blend with comfortable shorts underneath. The top has a cute hemline, vented sides, and it is longer in the back for some bum coverage. I kept it all! The skort and top are a steal at <$30 for both pieces.

My sister loved this outfit…except for the bag! She liked the bag on me, but felt like it did not look good on her body shape and size. She could wear the Lululemon bag around her waist, but the strap was not long enough for her to wear it comfortably cross body. Instead, she wore an Amazon bag that comes in a set of 2. She noted that she did not want to add any extra weight to her chest area.

My sister loved (and kept!) the skort. She stated that the ONLY thing that could have made the skort better was pockets. Athletic skorts (both skirt and dress styles) are very popular this season and this is a super affordable option if you want to give this trend a try. She stated that it was breathable and comfortable with a great length. Because of the material, she felt like it could be worn with regular t-shirts too. She noted that the top fit very nicely and she liked that the longer length covered her backside. The material was soft and moisture wicking. I loved this outfit on both our body types!

Outfit 4

This outfit is from Old Navy. I am wearing a size 2 in the shorts and a size XS in the sweatshirt. My sister is wearing a size 14 in the shorts and a size XL in the sweatshirt. The top is the prettiest spring color! There are two other colors available. Because it’s Old Navy, sizes will go in and out of stock and there is usually a sale.

It is so hard to find denim shorts that are not too short and not too tight or loose in the thighs. I struggle with shorts because I like them longer, but then they tend to be roomy in the thigh area. These jean shorts have a 5” inseam, but they are only slightly big on me in the leg area. I also love that the rolled part is tacked in place so it won’t unroll AND they’re midrise. The color is perfect to match anything, and I paired them with the footbed sandals we tried last year. This sweatshirt was soft and cozy without being too heavy, and the quilted detail was cute and eye catching. My only issue is that the sweatshirt was slightly cropped on my longer torso. My mom saw a photo of us in these sweatshirts and she loved the color too!

These shorts were also a great fit on my sister. The length was mom appropriate and they were not too tight or loose on her thighs. She shared that she liked that the shorts felt like great quality without too much stretch. Crewneck sweatshirts are back in style, but she struggled at first with this not being a hoodie! She runs warm, and she noted that this sweatshirt is lightweight and did not make her feel overheated. We decided that the cropped length sweatshirt might look best with a different bottom. Once she paired it with the Target denim above, she loved it and decided to keep the sweatshirt! This outfit would work on a wide range of ages, as well as different sizes.

Outfit 5

For this outfit, I am wearing a size 2 petite in the overalls. My sister is wearing a size XL in her overalls. We were supposed to have the same pair, but there was a little shipping and inventory issue (figures, right?).

A few weeks ago, I wore these overalls for the first time. I had not worn overalls since middle school (total 90s), so I was nervous that I would look dorky! I wore them to get ice cream with some pre-teens and teens and nobody made fun of me…so I felt safe (though I probably blended in with my 14 year old nephew’s age group!).

Overalls are very popular right now, but they can be a little expensive. These fit me perfectly and are great quality. Old Navy has also been running frequent sales on their overalls. I grabbed a shorts pair recently, but I like the pants version so much better. You can wear them with sandals or sneakers and with a short or long-sleeved top. They are fun to style and they don’t swallow my petite frame. You’ll find me in these all spring, summer, and fall!

My sister’s Old Navy overalls got lost in transit. They offered me a refund and said I could reorder and they would refund the difference, but by that time her size was temporarily out of stock. By that time, I needed something quick, so I ordered this pair off of Amazon. My sister loved the dark wash and the fit. My overalls have no stretch, but this pair was very stretchy and she liked the way they felt. The only issue is that the back looked like suspenders instead of regular overalls. Otherwise, she thinks overalls could work for her shape and age. I’m going to grab her the Old Navy version as soon as they are back in stock. She chose to wear sandals with hers, while I stuck with sneakers and a short sleeve top. I like both options!

My sister and I had so much fun with this sister styling segment since we did her first reel. We put on some music and got to try on lots of fun clothes. Just like after past sister styling sessions, now we have to try to not show up to places in the same outfit! Is there a style you would like for us to try?
