Year-Round Holiday Tree: How to Spice Up Your Seasonal Decor
Do you put your Christmas tree away as soon as Christmas is over, or do you let it linger in your home as long as possible?
I am guilty of putting my tree up a little early…and leaving it up a little late. For me, there is something magical about the lights, colors, and textures that make my home feel more inviting. This year, I noticed a new (to me) trend of folks leaving their Christmas trees up and redecorating them for subsequent holidays. Do you mean I can have a reasonable excuse to leave my tree up AND get more bang for my buck by using it for more than one season? Count me in.
I love having a tree up all the time. In the early morning when it is still dark and after the sun sets at night, turning the tree on adds instant warmth to my living room. Memorial Day and the 4th of July are right around the corner, so it is time for my Easter tree to get a makeover. Go ahead. Pull your tree back out and get on the bandwagon if you are not already!
The tree I use for this project is a pencil tree because it is slim and it moves around easily. I leave a base of lights and decorations that will work for any holiday, so I do not have to invest a lot for each specific holiday. I also never know what I will be able to find for a particular holiday since “ornaments” are typically only available around Christmastime in most places.
This is how my tree looks before I decorate it for the next season. The white lights and white ornaments stay on the tree all the time. Both work well for various holidays. So far, I have used this base for Valentine’s Day, Easter, and now Memorial Day/4th of July. You could also start with a bare tree for each holiday.
These are the items I used to turn our tree into a patriotic tree. I only purchased a few items and they are all on sale at Michaels, which also has curbside pick up.
I always start with a topper for our tree, sometimes it is a large bow (which you can make or buy) and sometimes it is an ornament or figurine. After the topper, I add thick wire ribbon or garland. I like to pick something that can cover the tree from top to bottom.
My last step is to add “ornaments” of some kind (since I already have lights). You may have to be creative for this step. For Valentine’s Day I used inexpensive foam Valentine’s Day stickers. I punched holes in the top of each one and hung them on the tree. For Easter I cut up carrot garland and turned the pieces into ornaments using twine. I also put hangers on crosses from the woodworking department and used those as ornaments.
For ornaments on this patriotic tree, I used a set of table scatters, some spray picks, and a roll of thin ribbon. The thin ribbon was very cost effective, as I only used one roll and I was able to tie many pieces on the tree. I love how they hang down off the tree because they remind me of fireworks.
I linked the specific items I used, but there are many options. I only used half of the thick wired ribbon. You can use code “20MAKE4120” to get 20% off the large bow. All the other products are already on sale.
You could certainly scale the decorations back, or punch them up even more. You can create something that fits your home and your preferences. I even considered changing the tree for personal holidays, like special birthday celebrations.
